In the latest news, scientists from the US have developed a way to mass produce super strong spider silk, just like the one used by Spider-Man. Spider silk is stronger than steel in weight-for-weight terms, however until now researchers have failed to find a way to reproduce enough for commercial production. Scientists from the University of Wyoming have genetically modified the silkworm to spin silk with spider protein. The study results were published last week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences magazine. This scientific breakthrough could open the door for large-scale production of spider-silk. The silk has many possible applications, from the medical world (artificial ligaments and tendons, tough wound dressings) and in warfare (bulletproof vests). Just another step to making Spider-Man come to life.
